How many times do you get the lyrics wrong?

I wish I could just say that
I am getting old and leave it at that ....

But I have been getting the lyrics wrong for
DECADES!

I was listening to my favorite oldies station today,
and this song came on.....

THE ASSOCIATION
"Along Comes Mary"
Every time I think that I'm the only one who's lonely
Someone calls on me
And every now and then I spend my time in rhyme and verse
And curse those faults in me
And then along comes Mary
And does she want to give me kicks , and be my steady chick
And give me pick of memories
Or maybe rather gather tales of all the fails and tribulations
No one ever sees
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch
When vague desire is the fire in the eyes of chicks
Whose sickness is the games they play
And when the masquerade is played and neighbor folks make jokes
As who is most to blame today
And then along comes Mary
And does she want to set them free, and let them see reality
From where she got her name
And will they struggle much when told that such a tender touch as hers
Will make them not the same
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch
And when the morning of the warning's passed, the gassed
And flaccid kids are flung across the stars
The psychodramas and the traumas gone
The songs are left unsung and hung upon the scars
And then along comes Mary
And does she want to see the stains, the dead remains of all the pains
She left the night before
Or will their waking eyes reflect the lies, and make them
Realize their urgent cry for sight no more
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch

Now I know that I cannot possibly be the only Baby Boomer that got this
verse absolutely wrong....

Now,
this is what I thought for over 40 years that they were saying.....
"M-O-U-T cup is as sweet as a cup...."
I know...
makes no sense at all....but that is what I heard,
and besides, the 60's didn't really make much sense, anyway.

Thank God for Google,
(no they don't pay me to say that)
there are plenty BB's out there who would really like to know the
lyrics to our favorite songs.....before we can't remember
what the name of the song was...
(that is actually a problem right now but that's another story)
And
so
We
Google
for the answer....

How about you?
Have you been singing the wrong lyrics, too?
What song, and what have you been singing?
Please share with me.....so I don't feel so silly....
smiles.

  1. These lyrics I must confess I knew; however, there have been hundreds of songs over the years that I've sung wrong...confidently, but wayyyyyyyyyyyy wrong!!!

  2. Ellen, I am so glad you addressed this! I know so many songs that sound like they're saying certain things, but are not. LOL. I hear ya! Happy New Year!

  3. Hi Ellen
haha yes I have a long history of 'hearing' the wrong lyrics.. as a child I sang 'Advance Australia Square' instead of our national anthem.. 'Advance Australia Fair'.. It's a little funnier for Sydneysiders as we have a famous building called Australia Square!!

I hope you had a lovely NYE.. and that 2011 brings you much happiness.. love that saying you left in comments.. "wear life, like a loose garmet".. I totally concur!!

    Have fun xxx Julie

  4. This is sooo funny! I know many songs that I have to google because I know I am singing the wrong words. I have a friend who we recently corrected over some lyric she had been singing for at least 20 years incorrectly. We laughed so hard we couldn't breath talking about it. You are definitely not the only one.
